USA Team finishes 5th in 2011 Summer Games PDF Print E-mail

October 2011

Led by a dominating swim team, the USA team earned 50 medals at the 2011 Summer Games in Shenzhen, China, to place 5th in the world.

The 50 total medals is the highest by a USA team since 1999. "Simply stated, it was a great effort by our student-athletes," said Gary Cunningham, former director of athletics at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and current president of the United States - International University Sports Federation (US-IUSF) Board of Directors.  "The 279 U.S. student-athletes who participated not only performed well in competition, but they also represented our country in a manner that would make all U.S. citizens proud.  It is these types of events that make international sports such a unique and educational opportunity for those who are fortunate enough to experience it," added Cunningham.

Over 150 countries participated in the games that involved approximately 10,000 athletes and coaches.  The host country, China, finished first winning over 100 medals.

In addition to winning 28 medals in men's and women's swimming, the USA team won medals in the following sports:

Track and Field - 9

Sailing - 2

Diving - 2

Women's basketball - 1

US-IUSF and BTI Events Announce Partnership PDF Print E-mail

United States International University Sports Federation

and BTI Events Announce Plans for U.S. Teams to Attend Winter and

Summer World University Games through 2015

SEATTLE, Wash, U.S.A., Feb. 15  – BTI Events and the United States International University Sports Federation (US-IUSF) announced a new partnership to assist in the logistical implementation of the World University Games and World University Championships for US teams. The relationship begins with the selection and support of teams for the 2011 Winter Games in Erzurum, Turkey, and the 2011 Summer Games in Shenzhen, China. The World University Games are one of the largest international sports competitions in the world (see http://www.fisu.net).

Dr. Gary Cunningham, President of the US-IUSF and the Head of Delegation for Team USA, said, “I am excited about our joint venture with BTI Events. The partnership will ensure more opportunities for student athletes to participate in the World University Games and will provide a quality experience for all participants.”

BTI Events Executive Director Nels Hawkinson offered, “BTI Events was created to pursue these types of important international athletic competitions. We are thrilled to be a part of it and look forward to a successful relationship with the US-IUSF and participating teams and athletes. We are exited to announce this joint venture while the world is turning its attention to the winter Olympics.” BTI Events staff includes collegiate sport coaches and international sport leaders. It is a subsidiary of Basketball Travelers, Inc., the leader in international basketball sport tours and events.

A new site has been developed to communicate with team and athlete participants, http://wugusa.com - information will be evolving on the site the next couple of months and it is intended to become a technical resource for those attending the games. Forms, procedures and manuals will be available there for completion and download.

In coordination with the US-IUSF, BTI Events will connect with national sports governing bodies, organizations, and university conferences to field competitive US teams for both the World University Games and the World University Sports Championships. Additionally, BTI Events will work with the US-IUSF to identify potential cities to host future World University Sport Championships.

US-IUSF Executive Secretary Dr. Stan Brassie agreed: "The US-IUSF is indeed fortunate to welcome BTI Events as a managing partner for the FISU World University Games and World University Championships.  It became quite apparent in 2009 that the US-IUSF, which is a totally volunteer organization, could not continue to provide the services that the USA athletes need and deserve. BTI Events has a professional staff, extensive international experience, and a commitment to provide services of which we can all be proud.  Although US-IUSF will continue to be very involved in overseeing every aspect, BTI Events will carry out the professional management of the competitions beginning in 2011. We look forward to a long and productive association with them."

ABOUT US-IUSF

The US-IUSF, formerly known as The United States Collegiate Sports Council (USCSC) began officially in 1967 as the official representative to the International University Sports Federation (FISU). Christina's Serbian BLOG PDF Print E-mail

 JULY 12

Cao,

This will be a short blog today, I spent a lot of time just lounging around and trying to play catch up on my rest and relaxation.

After spending the morning working in the office, I went downtown to buy some souvenirs and gifts to take home for and friends.  Ljiljana, Paul, Danko and myself went down to the walking street and had a great time just leisurely walking around and enjoying the beautiful day, and in Danko’s case, the beautiful women.  Ljilana treated me to my first fig.  I don’t think I live a sheltered life but I have never had a fig by itself before.  I have had fig cooked with other things but never just a fig.  It was good, I didn’t know what to expect but I liked it.  Ljiljana said that these were not fresh figs but I thought they were ok.

We also had a ceremonial sandwich exchange.  All of the volunteers with the World University Game get two boxed lunches a day.  I see volunteers all over the village eating these sandwiches and I really wanted to try one.  They are only available for volunteers but Danko said that he would steal me one.  All of the volunteers are sick of them (since they have been eating them twice a day for two weeks) so he was pretty surprised when I said I wanted one.  But he stole one for me and we had a little ceremony downtown of him giving me the sandwich.  The volunteers are right, the sandwiches are not that good and I am sad to say that mine ended up in a garbage can somewhere downtown.
